Decks are a great way to enhance outdoor living areas and have become a focal point for outdoor entertaining. There are many options for building materials with the most common being Treated Lumber, Cedar, and Composite.
TREATED LUMBER
Pressure treated lumber is an affordable deck material that is known for its longevity. However, it does require some maintenance including refinishing every couple years.
CEDAR
Cedar is known for its natural wood look and resistance to rot. It is slightly more expensive than treated lumber but less expensive than composites. Similar to treated lumber, cedar also requires some maintenance including refinishing every couple years.
COMPOSITE
Composite lumber has become the modern standard for decks. They are available in a wide range of colors and patterns and known to last for 20+ years with little to no maintenance.
Project planning creates an outline to systematically complete a construction project in the most efficient and cost friendly way.
THE BREAKDOWN
The creation of a plan begins with the project overview which is then broken down into individual tasks to be completed.
THE TEAM
Individual tasks are then assigned to team members of the corresponding trade.
THE RESOURCES
Materials will be selected and quantities will be determined to complete each task for completion of the project
THE BUDGET AND TIMELINE
Costs associated with each task are tallied to create an overall budget for the project. A timeline for the project is then created by scheduling resources to complete all tasks within the project.
THE OPERATIONS
The plan must organize operations to promote collaboration between team members resulting in concurrently completed tasks.
THE DELIVERY
Lastly the plan must contain milestones at which time the plan must be reviewed to ensure the project is on track to be completed on time and within budget.
Remodeling is a great way to revitalize a home and can range in size from a small bathroom project to changing overall floorplan of a home. Often these projects are completed while the home is occupied, making planning one of the most important aspects to ensure the least disruption to the residents as possible.
THE PLAN
Remodels have a reputation for starting out small and simple but turning into a large, complex, dragged out, and over budget nightmare. This reputation makes planning the most important step of a remodel project. After the scope and budget of the remodel have been determined, project planning can be used to ensure the remodel is completed in an orderly manner with exceptional results.
COORDINATING
As part of the project planning process an emphasis on coordination is required to ensure construction does not interfere with residents day to day activities and construction can be completed without hold up to meet an on time completion date.

Building a garage or shed can be a great addition to a property. Some extra space can help organize items and make them more accessible for everyday use. It is important to know what the space will be used for before building to ensure the building features align with the intended use.
DESIGN FEATURES
Whether building a shed or garage it is important to know what it will be used for. A garage built for a camper or motorhome would have features such as extra tall walls and an oversized overhead door. A garage built for entertaining may be fitted with a kitchen and a rear overhead door allowing access to an outdoor living area in the back of the house. A workshop would have extra lighting for work areas and outlets in specific locations for powering equipment. A garden shed used to store a riding lawn mower would require large doors and a ramp for ease of access.
Roofing and Siding are essential items to keep a property protected from the elements. The useful life of these items can vary tremendously along with the amount of maintenance required for each. Before selecting a material for roofing or siding it is important to do research on the product type and the specific material chosen.
ROOFING
The most common roofing material in our area is asphalt shingles. Depending on the shingle they can last anywhere from 10 to 30 years. When replacing a roof it is possible to install new shingles over the exiting ones providing the roof sheathing is thick enough to support the weight. This can save some money on removal now but will make it more difficult in the future to replace when two layers need to be removed.
Metal roofing has been becoming more popular due to its durability. An important thing to consider before selecting a metal roof material is the location it is installed in. Snow build up and ice tends to slide off metal roofs in large chunks. If the metal roof is sloped towards a driveway it is very likely a parked car will receive damage from falling material.
SIDING
Siding comes in a variety of materials including aluminum, vinyl, and wood. Aluminum siding is very durable but more difficult to work with and install. Vinyl siding is economic and easy to work with but will fade and crack over time. both aluminum and vinyl siding have very little maintenance. Wood products offer a unique look but do require regular maintenance to remain in good condition.
New doors and windows are constantly advertised as ways to improve a homes efficiency and cut down on energy usage. While that may be true in some cases, most of the time it is not.
THE TRUTH BEHIND DOORS AND WINDOWS
Old doors and windows are known for being drafty and these drafts become very noticeable in the winter. These drafts are often caused by bad seals that can be repaired at a much lower cost than a total replacement.
DOUBLE PANE OR TRIPLE PANE
Most windows installed in new homes are double pane. These windows are fairly efficient but known for condensation build up during the cold winter months. Triple pane windows offer a slightly higher efficiency allowing less condensation build up.
Additions require the same project approach as a remodel. Planning is the key to a successful addition.
PLANNING
Additions usually have a specific purpose such as adding a bedroom or family room. Space planning can ensure the addition is an appropriate size and will fulfill its intended purpose. After the scope of the addition is created using the space planning process, the steps provided in project planning can be followed to ensure the addition meets every aspect of the project scope.
HIDDEN COSTS
Every addition creates more living space that needs to be furnished. It is important to plan for these additional costs to ensure the addition is used to its full potential upon competition
