OUR STORY

My name is James, and I am the owner and operator of Clock’d Out Construction. Clock’d Out Construction was built on a lifelong passion for working with my hands, solving problems, and building things the right way. What started as curiosity as a young age has grown into a commitment to quality workmanship, continuous learning, and honest, hands-on service.

I’ve been building, fixing, and figuring things out for as long as I can remember. My introduction to construction didn’t start in a classroom or a jobsite, it started on a workbench. At just two years old, my dad had me sitting beside him on the workbench using a cordless drill. From that moment on, working with my hands felt natural.

In third grade, I got my first dirt bike, and with it came responsibility. Before I was allowed to ride, my dad made me read the entire owner’s manual cover to cover. I learned early how machines work by doing my own oil changes, cleaning air filters, and tensioning chains. That lesson stuck with me, if you’re going to use something, you should understand it.

By middle school, I was building real structures. I designed and built a deer blind that’s still in use today. In high school, my interest expanded into dirt work and fabrication. I built an ATV track using my uncle’s skid steer, my first hands on experience moving earth and shaping terrain. Around the same time, I designed and built two race cars that were taken to Road America and raced on the kart track. The second car went on to SkillsUSA, where we took first place in the state of Wisconsin.

After high school, I earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from UW-Platteville. Even during college, I stayed hands on designing and building a 12 x 16 hunting shack, precutting and labeling every piece so it could be hauled up north and assembled efficiently on site.

Following graduation, I became a service technician at Infinity Machine, working on paper packaging equipment across the country. I handled full mechanical and electrical installations, startups, troubleshooting, and field repairs. The work was demanding and technical, and it taught me how to solve problems under pressure in real-world conditions.

When COVID hit, constant travel suddenly felt uncertain. I realized I needed a backup plan and more importantly a path toward self-employment. That is when Clock’d Out Construction was born. The name represents clocking out of Corporate America and building something of my own. Although traveling did continue, I still had a desire to keep moving forward with my own business.

While still traveling for work, I invested in two duplexes and lived in half of one. Managing those properties taught me a tremendous amount about home maintenance, including everything from clearing clogged drains to replacing a roof. I wasn’t afraid to get my hands dirty, and every problem became another lesson.

Eventually, I need more space to grow. I sold the duplexes and purchased land with a shop/house. I took time off work and focused on improving the property, insulating and lining the shop with steel, installing a shop heater, adding a backup generator to the house, building a deck by the pond, expanding the driveway, and constructing a garden shed. To complete these projects efficiently, I purchased a skid steer, both as a tool and as an investment in the future of Clock’d Out Construction.

My first skid steer job was helping my best friend build his house. I used the skid steer to move gravel for the driveway, haul concrete for the patio, lift walls, set trusses, and spread topsoil. That experience confirmed what I already knew, this is the work I am meant to be doing.

I’ll be the first to admit, I still have a lot to learn. I’m always looking for opportunities to help others complete their projects while continuing to gain experience and improve my skills. I believe craftsmanship is a lifelong pursuit.

Above all, I believe that everything we do should be done for God, and He should be kept first in all things. That belief guides how I work, how I treat people, and how I run Clock’d Out Construction.
